aboutOne year on: South West Screen

Back in March 2007 Mud approached South West Screen with the idea of creating a podcast based on audio recorded from their live events. We've been doing exactly that ever since. Now we're at 17 episodes and counting, we have developed a great relationship with South West Screen, and better still - the podcast series has a strong audience of listeners who enjoy accessing the top-quality, relevant content that South West screen has to offer.

Our involvement in this podcast project was relatively simple because the content was already present. South West Screen has been producing live events for many years, so they are well-versed at offering compelling, relevant and important information to an audience of demanding creative professionals. In addition, South West Screen's event venues are able to record audio content directly from the live PA system. This means we don't need to bring in a dedicated sound recording crew - a factor that saves substantially on production costs.

Even though we don't get involved with content planning or sound recording, the South West Screen project remains a continuing challenge. We need to be flexible and clever enough to deal with the audio content that comes our way. It may be incomplete, packed with background noise, electrical interference, a bunch of 'ums' and 'errs' while the speaker grapples with their slideshow, or any number of other audio-related hiccups. It's the nature of the beast when it comes to live events, and aside from bringing in a dedicated (and expensive) recording crew, there's not much that can be done.

Because of these challenges, we've worked tirelessly over the past year to constantly improve the way in which we manage our post-production processes. This has meant investing in new audio/computer equipment and industry-leading software tools that help us clean, process and improve the quality of our audio output. We've developed our very own 3-step process which helps us manage our post-production processes from initial edit to final mix - ensuring mistakes are never made and audio quality remains consistent and of the highest possible quality.

To top it off we've produced all 17 episodes right on time, and right budget, within our initial estimates.

After 14 months working together we've established a great relationship with South West Screen. Here's what South West Screen had to say:

"A pleasure to work with - completely reliable and full of ideas, Mud always deliver on time and on budget. My favourite supplier!"
